Christopher Francis Ocean: Blonde

Image
Frank Ocean's musical talent is something of an old soul. From his early works of The Lonny Breaux to his latest album Blond, the artist's expansion in music has given us a piece of home. I started listening to Frank Ocean when mixtape, The Lonny Breaux, released in 2011. I've followed his music every step of the way and i'll cherish him and his music as a bi-sexual male. Later to find out he's a member of Odd Future in 2012, he'd continue to surprise me more and more in later years.  On August 20th, 2016 Frank Ocean released his album Blond following the album Channel Orange. Both great albums. This is more of an appreciation post of him and would encourage everyone to check out some of his music. His spacey, R&B, ambient music truly touches home base with me. Him as a singer/songwriter and featured rapper makes him an inspiration to spiritual freedom. He's also featured on A$AP's mob Cozy Tapes 2, Odd futures early works, and other ...

Earl Sweatshirt: Behind Solace

Image
OFWGKTA, multi-genre hip hop collective, emerged to the scene in 2009. Originally created by Tyler The Creator, the letters stand for Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. The collective consists of seven members, one of them named Earl Sweatshirt. The Rapper's real name is Thebe Neruda Kgositstile. Odd Future shook the hip hop scene with their intensely explicit lyrics, non-dimensional beats and eerie video content. This tight knit collective of people branched off a whole new genre of music and continues to inspire artists around the world. At the rise of their fame, Earl Sweatshirt leaves to a therapeutic reform school in Samoa. Tyler would start a "Free Earl" campaign in his absence without his consent. As their career paths took different turns, the seven letters would soon fade down memory lane. Tyler and Earl, especially, were displayed as close friends through the media. As time progressed, the two would separate into their own lives. Sweatshirt would ...

Paving The Way: Yin And Yang

I firmly believe there are no right or wrong decisions but only consequences in the life you're given. Everyone has their share of wrongdoings and with that comes lessons. As we grow older, there's a lot of self-realization and awareness brought to our attention we never come to conclusions about. We start to drift. We start to want to experience new experiences, meet new people, travel the world. Even if we start to leave people and past lives, your wants start to manifest on their own and cause lots of friction in your life.  I had moved from San Jose to live in San Francisco about three years ago. Away from friends, away from family, and created a new life. Three years later, I had moved back home and have been trying to make sense of why I don't feel the same about the relationships and I have back home as I once did before. This was a terrifying experience and I felt as if my life was falling apart as I was at a loss of friends. I had spent months alone battling w...

Watermelon Cereal: Grain Of Thought

The universe works in mysterious ways and whether you believe so or not, we're deeply connected to it. I'd say I'm a very spiritual being with high beliefs in karma, synchronicity, and some form of after life. People we come across, the events in our lives, all shape our lives and have meaning to them. If you're in a rough time, just know the universe is working in your favor.  Ponder this. We are nothing but consciousness in our bodies. Without our bodies we are nothing but consciousness.  We are only awareness.  Sounding crazy yet? Buddha said, "You don't have a soul, you are a soul, you have a body." Spiritual awakenings and ego death embody this ideal. You are more than just yourself. You, yourself, attend college. You, work a job. You, yourself, are a writer. Those are just things you do but do not define you. We give off energy, we feel energy, and are attuned to the world more than we think. Life can be a weird thing if you'...

High Anxiety: CBD Oil

I'm sure most of you've smoked pot. Weed, marijuana, ganja, dro, dank, potato, potato. Call it what you want, you've either smoked the plant, tried it in some form, or heard of it. No surprises in our post-modern world. Getting high is a debatable topic on itself, but there's another substance extracted from hemp called Cannabidiol or CBD for short. THC alone has many medical benefits in treating conditions like appetite loss, chronic pain, and other serious medical conditions. CBD on the other hand, essentially counteracts the high you receive from smoking or ingesting high amounts of THC. Now you're probably thinking, why would I want to kill my high? Well, for one, there's a possibility of getting uncontrollably high, which CBD can help with, but there are some surprising medical benefits to CBD alone. Although THC does help with anxiety, it effects every individual differently. For more chronic anxieties like anxiety disorders, CBD can help to reduce t...

Seeing in Color

Music is a universal language. We can all relate to the tempo of a song, and feel emotion through melodies, to a simple drum beat. About four years ago, I started to produce music as a hobby using Ableton Live. I'm no master engineer to the craft but there was a time where I was fascinated by production value. I began closely listening to crisp drum sounds and samples trying to figure out how I could sound design these myself. I'd still call myself a beginner and an amateur musician, yet music has always been an outlet for me to express myself. Want to get into music production? Without getting into signal processing here's some tips! Figure out what genre of music floats your boat and grab yourself a DAW, a pair of monitors along with an interface to run those monitors through, and quite possibly a mic. Moreover decide how you'll be recording.   Types of Digital Audio Workstations Ableton Live - great for live recording with a beginner friendly drag an...

Focusrite: Grain of Thought

There's an energy within ourselves we've either never touched or never channeled. I believe we all have hobbies or activities we gravitate to that make us whole. Whether or not you've found a particular hobby, we all have the capacity to imagine and create. Buddha said along the lines of "Life is a collection of thoughts". Now let me ask you this. Have you ever ignored a thought or idea? As ordinary people, we're often confined by things like work and school, but who really enjoys that? A nine to five job might be a necessity, but take your ideas to another level beyond the spectrum of normal life. Why? 'Cause why not! Don't get me wrong, school is cool and it might be a positive outlet for individuals to find their calling in the world, yet I believe it's wrecking a part in us allowing ourselves to think outside the box. The idea of constantly following directions is extremely dull. Anyone can do that.  Start a clothing line. Create mu...
